About us
The National Lutheran Health and Medical Board (NLHMB), the health and medical wing of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India is a non governmental organization engaged in Health care, Education, Community development and disaster management for the past two decades(www.nlhmb.in) NLHMB has been proactive in the area of health care which is not jmere absence of disease, but a way of life that promotes the total well being of the person-adversely affected when the social, cultural and economic, environmental and political conditions are not conducive. We are one of the pioneering organizations who have responded to various emergencies like HIV/AIDS, natural Disasters like earthquake, flood, Tsunami etc. that has had a devastating effect on our society and economy. We follow a holistic and integrated approach which caters to the developmental needs of communities and individuals. AIDS Desk/NLHMB has kept “Keeping Mothers Alive” as a slogan recognising the vulnerability of women in socially adverse situations. It has been our experience that through livelihood and income generating skills and occupations it is possible to restore the dignity and confidence of women. Please see snegidhi in (www.aidsindia.in) a venture of NLHMB.
The National Lutheran Health and Medical Board is a registered trust engaged in Health care, Education, Community development and disaster management. The NLHMB works through its institutions and partners which are many and all over the country. It was established in 1986 and since 2002 it has been a registered Trust.
Women’s health has been a priority for NLHMB right from its beginning. Poverty, economic dependence, burden of a large family and children’s education are some of the reasons that make women weak. Patriarchy, practiced in diverse forms resulting in inequality or exclusion of women in family decisions, work place and the society in general is another reason.. It is noted that women are one of the most affected victims of poverty, caste discrimination, war and the like. Women’s limited access to health services is multi-factorial and linked to her socio economic status. They are often excluded from the major health care packages. A major concern of NLHM is high rates of some diseases like anaemia among women in India. Another challenge for this organisation is the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of India which is one of the highest in the world and largest number of women, for a country, die in India during childbirth.
It is in this context that the NLHMB has developed this web portal, femhealth, where women have an easy and ongoing access to any health related matters and become familiar with their bodies, health and well being.
